Gold and Silver Jewellery Maintenance
Allergy to Gold and Silver Jewellery
Sometimes it is reported that people can get an allergic reaction to wearing gold jewellery. However it is very unusual for a person to be allergic to gold in its purest high carat form. It is far more common for allergic reactions to occur when wearing gold or silver jewellery that has a high alloy content as with nickel.
Nickel used in white gold alloys and silver because it is inexpensive, hard, and has a strong whitening effect. Better quality white gold alloys use palladium.
The most common cause of allergies fro wearing gold or silver jewellery is due to chemicals or detergent solutions being left on the surface after cleaning. The residue of these jewellery cleaning solutions become lodged in the settings and can get onto the skin during use. This most frequently happens when wearing rings and chains which are in constant contact with the skin surface for long periods of time.
It is vitally important to remove jewellery at the earliest hint of an allergic reaction and seek expert advice, also ensure that all jewellery is thoroughly rinsed and polished after using cleaning chemicals and detergents.
I some very rear cases where someone seems to have irritation from wearing 9ct gold jewellery it can be stopped by upgrading to a higher quality carat jewellery as with 18ct gold jewellery.
Deodorants can sometimes compound a metal allergy problem. Deodorants can reduce the bodies natural ability excrete metals such as nickel.
Gold and Silver Jewellery Cleaning
It is important that once you have purchased or been given your item of jewellery that you look after it and keep it clean to ensure it provides you with a lifetime of enjoyment and use. When jewellery is worn next to the skin, it will become covered in oily debris mainly composed of dead skin, grit. Everyday use and work also contaminates the jewellery being worn covering it in grease especially at the back of jewellery settings and stones.
Gold Jewellery
Most gold jewellery can be cleaned with warm soapy water, and gently dried afterwards. High carat gold such as 18 carat and above, will be more resistant to tarnishing and less likely to be damaged by use and household chemicals.
Lower carat gold can be harmed by contact with chlorine based bleach and cleaning chemicals.
You should always avoid cleaning your jewellery with bleach or other cleaners containing chlorine, and also to avoid wearing it when in contact with bleach.
Stone settings can easily be damaged if handled roughly, but Diamonds are very hard and therefore resistant to damage, unless they are rubbed together which can cause scratching and abrasion to their surfaces making them dull and less transparent.
Ruby and sapphire are easy to clean in the same way as diamonds, but it is sensible to ensure that stones cannot rub against other stones during cleaning.
Silver Jewellery
925 sterling silver is also easy to maintain and keep clean is a few simple do‘s and don‘ts are observed:
Dopurchase good quality well made silver jewellery items as they will last longer, look better and be less likely to cause allergic reactions.
Doclean your silver jewellery regularly using a mild soap and warm water. For heavy dirt or tarnishing use a quality silver cleaning dip or jewellery cleaning cloth.
Dobe proud to wear your silver jewellery as it is just as beautiful as gold and just as popular if not more so.
Doavoid storing your silver jewellery together in one twisted mass as this will cause chains to become tangled, twisted and damaged. It will also result in your jewellery becoming scratched and stone settings weakened.
Don’tStore your sterling silver in the open air and humidity for extended periods of time can cause it to tarnish quickly
Don’tclean your silver jewellery to briskly or with an abrasive cloth which could easily scratch its surface. Silver is a relatively soft metal which can be damaged in this way.
Don’tshare jewellery especially earrings as this can cause the transfer of infections.
Don’t Mix your silver and gold jewellery together as this again can cause damage and may result in quicker tarnishing than normal.
